The BC SPCA at a Glance
Our Mission:
The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing
the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British
Columbia. The BC SPCA provides
a wide range of services for nearly 40,000 homeless, abused, and abandoned
animals around the province. The BC SPCA was created under the auspices
of the provincial Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and is the only
animal welfare organization in BC which has the authority to enforce laws
relating to animal cruelty and to prepare cases for Crown Counsel for the
prosecution of individuals who inflict suffering on animals.
Our Statistics:
The Society has 420 staff members (full-time, part-time and auxiliary) and 4,000 volunteers throughout the province.
Our staff includes
40 Special Provincial Constables, who are trained to investigate complaints of animal cruelty and neglect.
In
2008 the BC SPCA:
Operated 31 animal shelters, two
education & adoption centres, one store-front adoption facility, three
volunteer run branches without facilities and Wild ARC, a wildlife
rehabilitation centre in Metchosin on Vancouver Island;
Rescued 36,991 injured,
homeless, neglected and abused animals (companion, farm and wild);
Reunited thousands of lost animals with their anxious
families;
Found new, loving families for 19,951 homeless
animals;
Rescued 1,867deer, birds and other wildlife
at Wild ARC, the BC SPCA’s wildlife rehabilitation centre;
Conducted 4,780 cruelty
investigations;
Removed 1,297 animals from dangerous or neglectful situations through cruelty investigations, and rescued
an additional 3,980 injured animals;
Executed 111 warrants under the Criminal Code of Canada, the PCA Act and the Offense
Act;
Submitted 98charges of animal cruelty and neglect to Crown
Counsel;
Offered humane education programs for thousands of children, youth and adults in
BC.
